What this service is

A service connection links a property to the public water main or sewer system. We excavate to the main, make the connection, install the service line to the property, test it, and restore the site. On the water side, that typically means a wet tap made without shutting down the main. On the sewer side, a lateral connection at the main or manhole.

Scope of work by client

For municipalities and utility authorities

  • Wet tap installation using tapping sleeve and valve assemblies (AWWA C509/C515)
  • Corporation stops and service lateral installation
  • Hydrostatic pressure testing per AWWA C600
  • Sanitary sewer lateral connections: core drill with elastomeric boot, or wye fitting
  • ASTM D3034 SDR 35 PVC gravity sewer; air testing per ASTM F1417
  • Manhole connections and vacuum testing
  • Trench excavation under a designated OSHA Competent Person (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P)
  • Work in public right-of-way under applicable encroachment permits

For developers and builders

  • Wet taps without shutting down the main
  • Setting the saddle and corp stop, running the lateral, setting the meter box
  • Sewer taps: core and boot, setting the wye, tying into the manhole
  • Pressure and air testing so inspection passes the first time
  • Our own excavators, trench boxes and crews [equipment list to be confirmed]
  • Coordinated with your schedule, lot by lot or across a subdivision

Scope

Where our work ends and the plumber's begins.

North Carolina law defines the limit of a public utilities contractor's scope. On water service lines, our license covers work from the main to within 5 feet of the building foundation. On sewer lines, from the main to within 10 feet of the exterior wall. Beyond those points, the work requires an NC-licensed plumbing contractor. We define that handoff point in every scope so nothing falls between trades.
